I recently took part in a fundraising event, a Girls Night in aid of our local kickboxing club here in Leixlip, Bushido Martial Arts.  I’m putting this Thank You on my blog here as some of those who donated prizes for the raffle and spot prizes are from the craft community and I’d like to acknowledge their support at this time.188170_123204071162492_33158429_n-girls-night1

For the best part the event was organised through Facebook and I have included our Thank You post here.

capture-girls-nightI’d like to give a special thanks to Mary & Greg Whelan from Irish Linen House for the lovely gift of their Christmas Table Runner.  I have mentioned Greg and Mary here before as I first met them a number of years ago when they first launched their range of table ware at Showcase and it’s wonderful to see how they have grown and flourished in the meantime. Their range can be viewed online and are stocked as far a field as Canada and the US, as well as here in Ireland.  For more information check the website Irish Linen House.

If you are buying gifts this holiday season please try to shop local, if you can’t buy local then please buy Irish!

Check out the IKEA App, there are some nice features included. There are a number of brochures included in the App. When downloading the App you pick your Country so the brochure is specific to what is available in your local store. There are brochures within the app for different departments like Kitchens & Appliances, Wardrobes, Bestå, Bathrooms and even a brochure for Business. Each brochure is downloadable separately.

There is also a full catalogue: it is a page by page of the hardcopy but with the additional feature where you can share a page, add to favourites or even share the entire catalogue. Additional content and video is available on some pages. This really brings the app to life.

So rather than just seeing the room setting is a still photo each item in the room can give a different perspective as the additional content can be a variety of photos from different angles and even close up pictures of individual items, whether fabrics, cushions or even furniture.

I’ve been busy lately doing a lot of networking and attending seminars, the one that I would recommend to anyone who is in business, if its on near you is The Better Business Show for details www.betterbusiness.ie The small firms association is involved in this show and following on from this I was invited and attended a networking event which took place in the O’Callaghan Davenport Hotel and was sponsored by Vodafone.  It was the first time that I had attended such a large event and thoroughly enjoyed it - though I was promoting the other business Pedreschi Electrical & Alarms at that event.

The Kildare Enterprise Board, women is business initiative which I have been attending for the last two to three years has been withdrawn for funding reasons.  This was a great event, there were great speakers every month and I’d made a lot of what I’d call friends through attending this event - I’ll really miss it.

Another event which I attended and again enjoyed was the Life Lasting Success event which was held in the Red Cow Hotel, I had applied for and received the tickets from Krishna De, having been told about the event by Lorna at Garrendenny Lane.  We had a catch up and a chat with fellow twitter member JBBC.  This was a very long day - for I could only make it on the Friday.  The high point for me was listening to the inspiring talk given by Sean Gallagher of Smarthomes and RTE’s Dragon’s Den.

As a Smarthomes approved installer and working in the construction sector I could really relate with what Sean had to say.  I took away a list of books to read - some of which I had already on my bookshelves and must revisit.

Well Christmas is well and truly upon us and midnight the 21st December is the final deadline for orders to be dispatched in time for Christmas.
To all of my followers and supporters I’d like to say Thank You for following my blog posts for the last year and I look forward to hearing from you in the New Year.  I’d like to wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosprous New Year.

It’s been a great year for us in some ways and a very sad year in others, for nine months we attended a funeral a month.  We also lost our pet of seventeen years during the summer, so its been hard.

On a brighter note, we (at Pedreschi Electrical & Alarms Ltd, where I work alongside my husband Daniel)were announced the RECI contractor of the Year at a ceremony in the Burlington Hotel which was a great night.  To be awarded the winner in the Domestic Category for the Dublin Region was a great surprise, but then Daniel is really good at what he does.  We finalised our certification process with the EQA and completed our PSA licensing application, required to carry out works on intruder alarm systems.  We also became an approved installer for the MK Smarthomes range of audio/visual equipment.  And signed up to the SEI for the Approved Contractor which enables us to carry out grant work on heating controls.  We attended the Business Fair in Johnstown House, it was the first time that we attended an exhibition on behalf of the electrical business. We updated our website to include blog style posts and have included a contact us page, we are participating in “Social Media” you can find up on Twitter.  @PedreschiElect  We are members of the Kildare Business Network.

While here at Harmony Design Studio things have also been busy, I was featured on Ireland AM on TV3 as part of the “Recession Bussiness - Section”.  I even did some business on the day, which was great!  Having been a part time student at the NCAD, I took part in the end of year exhibition in June.  My stock is also for sale via the Gifts and Vouchers website and also on the AnPost Online Shopping website. I have been busy in the run up to Christmas and didn’t do as many craft fairs as I would normally do, the one that I did attend was at the RTE Sports & Social Club.  I have my head in the books again and for the foreseeable future, I am studying at the IT  Tallaght on the Energy & Environment course.

One of the high points for my son was meeting the boxer Bernard Dunne, who was attending a trade event at Donnelly’s Tools during the summer.  Bernard was such nice lad it was such a shame to see his defeat later in the year.  The other big thing for my son was his junior cert which he passed with flying colours.  Its just 12 months since had his own great achievement.  The photo below shows Alex Pedreschi and Roy Baker, it was taken in December 2008.

Having reflected on the last twelve months its now time to plan ahead for the next twelve months.  To each of you have a great Christmas and a very Peaceful New Year.

Well its that time of the year again, holiday time and I’m off to France.  There are a number of antique shops nearby to where I’ll be staying and I plan of spending a day or two checking out what’s on offer.  I love France and the French style of furniture, even the brickwork is lovely!

It will be a well desvered rest as I’ve been hard at work marketing both of our businessess, Harmony Design Studio and Pedreschi Electrical & Alarms Limited.  While at the electrical business we have just completed our audit and have received our Certificate of Registration from EQA (Ireland) Ltd on Intruder Alarm Systems, having been assessed and meeting the standards I.S. EN 50131-1:1997    and I.S. CLC/TS 50131-7:2003.

I have a Craft fair organised for 15th August at Action Enterprise in Clondalkin, I’ll post the times nearer to the date.  I’ll also have some art for auction at the Rutland Center for the Garden Party on 23rd August, again I’ll post the times nearer to the date just to remind you all to turn up and give your support.

am

Harmony Design Studio was featured on TV3’s Ireland AM recession business slot on Friday June 5th.

The programme is such a great resource as a marketing platform for small, new businessess particularly during these hard times.  I am really happy that I was given the opportunity to showcase my business to such a large and varied audience.  I really enjoyed the experience and the hosts Mark and Sinead made us all feel at ease right from the start.

For those of you who are visiting the site for the first time I have given a brief overview to the background and how the business was established.  The business is the brainchild of Niamh Pedreschi who registered the business name in November 2008 and the online shop went live at the end of March 2009.

Niamh has a diploma in residential interior design and has been a self taught artist exhibiting her paintings and handmade clocks for a number of years. The art up to now has been viewed as a hobby.

Harmony Design Studio features an interior design blog along with a gallery page and the all important online shop. Transactions are made via PayPal or there is a downloadable order form which can be completed and ordered in the traditional way via post when accompanied with a cheque or postal order.

The handmade clocks are all individual and no two are the same, they are functional art. The mixed media canvas is embellished with glass mosaics amongst other items. Commissions can also be taken for a specific size or colour scheme. Commissions can be taken for your own design, company logo can be incorporated to make a statement piece/timepiece for your reception area or boardroom.

Niamh has sixteen years business experience in running a successful electrical and alarm contracting firm along with her husband Daniel. Pedreschi Electrical & Alarms Limited is a small family run business that has recently been awarded with the accolade of being named RECI Contractor of the Year 2009, in the Dublin Region for the Residential Category.

The website for the electrical business is http://www.pedreschi.com

The backstory on how I started making clocks is a simple one really.  The first clock that I made was for my son, it was May 2002 and Harry Potter was big in our house.  Daniel had made a headboard from MDF in the shape of a castle and I had painted it in the style of Harry Potter.  I had also painted a mural on one of the bedroom walls.  With some left over timber we cut out the shape of what we though a snitch should look like and I mounted a clock into it.  The next time that I was preparing for an art exhibition I decided to mount a clock into the canvas. Thats where it started and it has grown from there.

I finally got around to redesigning the logo for Harmony Design Studio, its the last of the items on my to do list following the rebranding from pedreschi.ie and I must say that I’m happy with the overall logo.

It is in keeping with the previous logo in style and colour.

I went along to the Furniture & Home Accessories Fair today, this fair is for trade only and is held at the RDS in Dublin.  There was a vast range of exhibitors displaying a range of traditional and contemporary furniture from sofas, dining room sets, beds right through to garden products and giftware.

There were also exhibitors featuring art, mirrors, lamps and lighting.

I went along with the intention of researching products that would complement my range of artwork, in particular accessories for the home and interior.  There were a number of products that would suit - I just have to figure out where I go from here!

While attending the ISEC 2009 exhibition (Trade fair for security equipment) at the Citywest Conference Centre earlier today we called into Avoca in Rathcoole for tea and scones………….ummmm.

I just love their range of homewares and of course their Apple Tarts are just delicious, as are the scones.

They have a range of some items for sale via the website www.avoca.ie

Anyone involved in the construction sector will be aware of the changes which came into effect on September 1st.

Subcontractors will no longer charge VAT to the principle contractor.  The principle contractor will declare the VAT on their VAT returns.

This only effects invoices generated on or after 1st September, so if there are amounts outstanding from invoices raised before this change came into effect the VAT element should be still be paid by the principle to the subcontractor.

This however does not effect work carried out for individuals, where the VAT remains chargable.

Well the builders holidays are over, they flew as usual and for now it’s back to business.  It is hard to get motivitated to get back into the swing of things but the long school holidays are also drawing to a close and then it will be easier to get back into a routine.

We did the “back to school” shopping last week, got the books, uniform and shoes, so now if we do get some fine weather as least we have that lot sorted.

Pedreschi Electrical & Alarms Limited, the company that my husband Daniel and I set up way back in 1993, is celebrating 15 years in business this coming week.

The problem with most tradesmen is that though they go to work every day and carry out a hard days work, they really don’t see themselves as businessmen which is a real pity.  Particularlly when the whole economy is built on this very industry, the construction industry.

To all our customers we are grateful of your support throughout the last fifteen years, check the recently launched website www.pedreschi.com for news and other useful information regarding the electrical industry.
